Coffing Hoist – Explained

What Is A Coffing Hoist And How Does It Work?

A Coffing hoist is a chain operated type of hoist and Coffing is a trade name that is used. The name Coffing hoist is frequently used in a generic way to describe all similar types of lifting devices. There are various types of Coffing hoists, some are operated manually and others utilize an external source of power. All of these devices make use of a system comprised of ratchets and cogs that will lift a chain suspended hook block. Manual types of Coffing hoists are normally operated using a lever or a loop of chain that is continuous and it will drive the lift using a cog.  Coffing hoists that use an external power source are powered by an electric motor or using compressed air.

Coffing hoists are a group of hoists that are chain driven and are the best known of these types of hoists. The Coffing name has become synonymous with chain hoists and other brands are referred to generically as a Coffing hoist. These types of hoists are sold in a wide range of loading capacities and configurations. A Coffing hoist is a reliable, safe, and simple solution for hoisting that will take very little operator skill or maintenance.

How Does A Coffing Hoist Work?

Chain hoists operate by lengthening or shortening a chain loop that has a hook block suspended from it. When the loop of chain is lengthened, the suspended hook block will be lowered along with the load that is on it.  When the chain look is shortened the load and the hook block are lifted up. This is accomplished by attaching a fixed loop end to a stationery point within the hoist, and the other end will be attached to a spool that is driven.  The loop of chain that is exposed beneath the casing of the hoist will be wrapped around a cog in a free spool that is inside the hook block.

Upon activation of the hoist, the take up spool, dependent on the direction in which it is driven, will either unwind or wind its chain around an arbor.  This will effectively lengthen or shorten the chain loop. Because of the hook block’s spool cog, it will not move in a fixed position along the length of the chain. It will move straight down or up at the loop’s apex while it shortens or lengthens. This will furnish the lowering or raising of the Coffing hoist load.

Differences Between Manual And Powered Coffing Hoists

Manual and powered hoists are both available, but they function differently. Manual models will use either a continuous chain loop or make use of a lever to provide power to drive the hoist’s take up spool.  There will be a switch so the user can select if he wants to raise or lower their load.  Powered Coffing hoists will make use of an electric motor or compressed air to power this mechanism. The motor controls are typically suspended from the casing of the hoist and will be on a cable that will allow the operator to control the device from a safe distance.
